1. Roughleys Wood
Back Lane, Maghull
Just on the edge of Maghull, Roughleys Wood offers footpaths,
woodlands,
wildflowers and picnic areas, just waiting to be discovered.
2. Jubliee Wood
Bridges Lane, Maghull
On the edge of Maghull, Jubilee Wood offers footpaths,
picnic areas
and wildflowers. Jubilee Wood is part of the long distance
footpath,
the Trans Pennine Trail, so you could set off from Sefton
and end up in Hull!
3. Whiston Wood
Cumber Lane, Whiston
A Community Woodland on the doorstep of Whiston, with
trees and wildflowers,
paths and wildlife waiting to be discovered. Created
from farmland and now open
for everyone to enjoy, you could even get involved with
the local community
group helping to run the site.
4. Sutton Manor
Jubits Lane, Rainhill
A wasteland converted to a woodland! Sutton Manor is
a green oasis, with paths
and picnic areas and a fantastic view from the top.
5. Maypole
Hall Lane, Burtonwood
Just a short walk from Burtonwood is Maypole, with trees
and meadows, paths
and wildlife, offering a varied landscape to explore.
There is a lot to see and do
with a range of local pubs and restaurants to relax
in after you walk.
6. Wheatacre
Gorsey Lane, Burtonwood
Located near to Burtonwood is Wheatacre, which offers
trees, meadows, wildlife
and paths to explore the site.
15. Hopyards
Marbury Road, Northwich
With over 400 hectares, there are lots to discover and
always something new
to see at Hopyards and the Northwich Community Woodlands.
You can enjoy
a 5 minute stroll or a day expedition to explore the
woodland and surrounding
area, you could visit the Anderton boat lift and lunch
in a local pub or restaurant.
16. Uplands
Marbury Road, Northwich
The Uplands site is part of the 400 hectare Northwich
Community Woodland,
offering a varied and interesting landscape waiting
to be explored.
17. Old Pale
Linmere, Delemere, Northwich
Old Pale is a large site next door to Delemere Forest.
With footpaths,
an amphitheatre and a great view from the top, it’s
a great place to enjoy
a walk and then relax in the Visitor Centre or station
café.
18. Griffin Wood
Hall Lane, off Gorsey Lane, at Bold, near St Helens
Griffin Wood is the latest addition to The Mersey Forest.
Formerly farmland,
Griffin Wood is now being transformed into community
woodland with

7. Viridor Wood
Bolton Road, Bryn Gate, Ashton in Makerfield
From Colliery to Community Woodland! With large open
spaces, great views,
sculptures and car parking, Viridor Wood is a great
place to visit.
9. Barlow’s Wood
Bickershaw Lane, Bickershaw, Leigh
Three farms and two collieries, Barlow’s Wood
has seen some change over
the past centuries. Now rejuvenating as a mosaic of
wetland and new woodland
there is an abundance of flora and fauna.
10. Byrom Wood
Slag Lane, Lowton, Golborne
Until recently Byrom Wood was mixed farmland. Woodland
creation, open
meadows and a circular trail are helping to transform
the area. There are
footpaths and conveniently located benches to admire
the views and take
in the wildlife that the wood offers.
11. Colliers Wood
Queens Way, Higher Folds, Leigh
Over 30 years ago this way was an active coal mine with
colossal spoil
heaps bordering up to the local houses. The 130 hectare
woodland has
since been dramatically landscaped to create open spaces
and great
vistas across to Winter Hill, Astley Green and on a
clear day the Welsh Mountains.
12. Windy Bank Wood
Jennets Lane, Glazebury, Warrington
Established on former farmland with tranquil walks through
the edges
of ancient peatland, open meadows and newly created
woodland.
13. Horrocks Wood
Scout Road, Horrocks Wood, Bolton
Set within the foothills of Winter Hill, Horrocks Wood
is a lovely site.
on clear days views to Jodrell Bank Observatory and
beyond can be enjoyed.
14. Hurst Wood
Copper Lane, Whitefield, Bury
Combing ancient woodland valleys, new tree planting
and open meadows,
Hurst Wood is a beautiful area. Set adjacent to the
Irwel Valley with great
views across to Manchester and Winter Hill.
